We broadcast two daily news shows on YouTube and our social media channels: “Mornings on Main Street,” hosted by Joe Dubin, from 7 to 8 a.m. Monday-Friday; and “Main Street Today,” hosted by Devon O’Day, from 11 to 11:30 Monday-Friday.

Both Joe and Devon love animals and do regular segments about adopting pets, rescue organizations and more. One of our most popular is the “Pet of the Week” segment on “Mornings on Main Street” sponsored by Hunter Briley from Regal Realty Group. Hunter and Joe spotlight a dog each week and their segment has helped a number of our furry friends find new homes.

So, I was excited when I had the opportunity to run in a 5K on Dec. 18 that supported several different animal rescue organizations. Ellen and I spent that weekend in Indianapolis at a wedding. Our second oldest son, Andrew, was there as well and he suggested we run the Jack’s Donut 5K, the “sweetest race in Indiana.” There were a couple thousand people there (as well as lots of dogs) and, despite the cold and rainy weather, we had a great time. Plus, at the end of the race we got to sample, what else, but donut holes from Jack’s Donuts. They were good!

Just like in Indianapolis, we have several outstanding rescue organizations in Middle Tennessee. Here’s a link that can help you find one to support near you. www.dogloversdigest.com/tennessee-rescue-shelters-and-organizations/

What better way to start the new year than running in a 5K? On New Year’s Day, I ran in the Sumner County YMCA Frostbite 5K. You may remember we had some unseasonably warm weather on Jan. 1. Rather than frostbite you were more than likely to get a sunburn. But, as for running weather, it was perfect. The run was very well organized with child care and bouncy houses for the kids along with a kids fun run and a 5K as well as a 10K.

Have you been to the YMCA lately? I’m sure many of us made New Year’s resolutions about getting into better shape and/or losing weight. In addition to being a great workout facility, the Ys have programs and services including health and fitness classes, swimming, youth sports, programs for children and teens and much more. Plus, there are locations all over Middle Tennessee. Check out www.ymcamidtn.org/ for more information.
