All five Robertson County football teams, alongside six other Midstate schools and one team from Kentucky, had their final taste of preseason action with Friday’s Robertson County football jamboree at East Robertson.
Greenbrier and White House Heritage were the two schools from Robertson County to come away with wins in the two-quarter games. Springfield and East Robertson lost their matches, while Jo Byrns finished its game in a scoreless tie.
Below are recaps and scores from each contest.
Houston County 16, Clarksville Academy 13
Clarksville Academy quarterback DJ Merriweather connected with senior Cooper Wallace for two scores early, but Houston County countered with two touchdown runs to come back and win the jamboree’s opener.
The Irish sealed the game with a pair of successful two-point conversions and an interception at midfield.
Jo Byrns 0, Todd County Central (Ky.) 0
With new starting quarterback Taylor Head, Jo Byrns orchestrated a nine-minute opening drive against Todd County before penalties moved them out of scoring position.
The Red Devils punted to close out their first drive, and their second opportunity on offense ended with the final buzzer. Jo Byrns, which committed six penalties in two quarters, had just two drives for the game.
Greenbrier 6, East Robertson 0
Greenbrier head coach John Elmore made an emphasis in the offseason for his team to finish drives.
He got what he wished for in the jamboree. The Bobcats’ only possession featuring their starting offense finished with a touchdown pass from Nolan Carson to top receiver Travarius Flood.
East Robertson, meanwhile, did not play senior running back Zech Prince or junior receiver Elijah Groves, who sported a cast around his left wrist. The Indians missed a field goal, failed a fourth-down conversion and punted in their three drives on offense.
Donelson Christian 14, Springfield 7
Springfield’s first-team offense only played the opening drive in its game against DCA, but it still found a way to make an impact, with quarterback Devon Crenshaw finding Clarence Cobbins on the run for a 30-yard score.
Special teams miscues gave the Wildcats a chance to come back and win the contest, though. A muffed punt return gave the ball back to Donelson Christian in the first quarter, and running back Ashton Jones capitalized with a run to tie it at 7-7.
DCA quarterback Mitchell Carey connected with Carter Hackman for a long touchdown pass on the ensuing drive to take the win.
McEwen 16, Cheatham County 8
Cheatham County’s offensive and defensive unit finished much better than it started on Friday.
McEwen scored on its first two possessions easily to take a 16-0 lead just minutes into the scrimmage, while the Cubs lost a fumble and failed to convert on fourth down twice in their first four drives.
Sophomore Tydarius Bright salvaged things with a 70-yard touchdown run on Cheatham’s final possession of the evening. The defense followed that up by recovering a fumble at the horn.
White House Heritage 13, Liberty Creek 0
The Patriots got the better of former head coach Stetson Dickerson – now the offensive coordinator at first-year program Liberty Creek – when the Wolves and White House Heritage finished Friday’s jamboree action.
Senior running back Colby Hulsey broke free for touchdown runs of 63 and 20 yards, and Heritage’s defense held Liberty Creek to a pair of punts and a failed fourth-down conversion.
Football season in the Robertson County-area begins Friday, Aug. 19 with the following games:
Springfield at Greenbrier
WH Heritage at Warren East (Ky.)
East Robertson vs Macon County
Jo Byrns at Harpeth
White House at Station Camp
