Cheatham County Central started its district tournament run with a win against Harpeth by a score of 10-4 before advancing to face number one seed White House-Heritage.

Against the Lady Patriots, Cheatham’s Georgia Hunter hit a two-run home run in the top of the seventh inning to give the Lady Cubs a 6-5 lead and win to advance to the district finals.

Cheatham would have to face Harpeth in the finals after the Lady Indians were able to defeat White House-Heritage. Cheatham defeated Harpeth 5-4 to take the District 9-2A finals.

“Words can’t describe how truly proud I am of these girls,” Cheatham coach Jahcenda Garrett said. “The fight that the team showed proves how much they have grown. The beginning of the year, we wouldn’t have fought back against White House-Heritage or Harpeth (after losing the lead). Everyone played their role when it was needed, and it’s such a blessing to see the girls do what they love and have fun with it.”

Katelyn Sisco started and pitched every inning for Cheatham County Central throughout the tournament.

“(Katelyn) Sisco had a great tournament,” Garrett said. “She proved that she is a true fighter and the girls played very well behind her.”

Sisco’s offense was part of the story in the opening game against Harpeth. Sisco picked up four RBI as Sydney Crouch knocked in two runs herself and scored two runs. Both Crouch and Sisco led Cheatham with two hits each. Macie Harter and Ansley Pfeffer scored two runs each in the game as well.

The second-round game against White House-Heritage was a nail-biter for the Lady Cubs. Cheatham was able to score the first run in the first inning as Pfeffer scored thanks to an error but White House-Heritage took the lead back in the bottom of the second inning.

Cheatham came back to score two in the fourth inning and one in the sixth to take a 4-2 lead going into the bottom of the sixth but the Lady Patriots put together a very strong inning scoring three runs and giving themselves a 5-4 lead.

The Lady Cubs seemed like they were headed towards the loser’s bracket until Georgia Hunter hit a fastball deep into the night for a two-run home run. Hunter’s home run gave Cheatham a 6-5 lead. Sisco would then pitch a scoreless seventh inning to take the 6-5 win.

After taking down White House-Heritage, Cheatham had a meeting with Harpeth for the district tournament championship.

Cheatham, again, took a lead late into the game as the Lady Cubs led 2-1 heading to the sixth inning. The Lady Cubs offense put up three runs in the bottom of the sixth and they needed every run as Harpeth would score three runs in the top of the seventh but couldn’t catch all the way up.

With that 5-4 win over Harpeth, Cheatham won the District 9-2A tournament.

“I could feel my heart beating out of my chest during that seventh inning,” Garrett said. “We work on situations like that at practice but in the game it’s very common for nerves to take over and that’s what happened. After Macie (Harter) caught the fly ball and threw the runner out for the double play I knew that they had it. I was still in shock but an ease came over me. Moving forward, we are just going to take it one inning at a time. At the end of the day, it’s only softball and these girls have been playing since they were four-years-old. I’m glad we don’t have to travel for our game Monday and hopefully a big crowd can come out to support.”

Cheatham’s region game on Monday will take place against the runner-up from District 10. There’s no information on which team won that district so far.
