FAIRVIEW – The Indians and Lady Indians both came out a little sluggish, especially offensively, and that was all Fairview needed on their coming home night to get wins over the Harpeth teams. The Lady Indians had a few nice runs in the second half to cut the deficit, but ultimately fell 55-44 while the Harpeth boys’ team lost 47-32.
The Lady Indians got off to a terrible start as Fairview went into the half up 32-10, but the second half was much better for the Harpeth girls’ squad.
Liza Watson led Harpeth with 15 points while Jessi Knall added 12 as the only two scorers for Harpeth in double digits. Harpeth cut Fairview’s lead to 42-21 by the end of the first quarter and then the Lady Indians really took off in the fourth and final quarter, although it was too late.
“We know what our girls are capable of, and when the team believes that themselves, we are capable of a lot,” Harpeth Lady Indians coach Karley Miller said. “Our girls came out in the third and fourth quarter with a ton of energy.”
Fairview would hold on to get the 55-44 win over Harpeth, although the Lady Indians did show some offensive fire power in the second half. The Lady Indians are now 6-13 in Miller’s first year as head coach while going 3-5 in district.
“Unfortunately, we just couldn’t dig out of the hole quick enough,” Miller added. “Coach Katie and I noticed from the tip that our girls came out with a flat energy about them, but you have to give credit to Fairview’s coaching staff to recognize our energy and meet us with a press there in that first half. We challenged our girls at halftime to come out with some pride and fire. We are looking forward to next week’s district matchups.”
The boys’ game was a little sloppy during the first half as Fairview only led 14-11 at half, but the second half was tough still for Harpeth as the Yellow Jackets finally found a rhythm, while the Indians just couldn’t get going.
Fairview pushed the lead out to 31-25 at the end of the third quarter and really exerted pressure in the final quarter as they finished with the 47-32 score.
Aiden Williams, who has been a consistent offensive piece all season, led Harpeth with 18 points and the Indians did have seven total players score, it just wasn’t enough.
Harpeth will get back to action next week as they host cross-town rival Cheatham County Central. Harpeth’s boys’ team has moved to 7-12 on the season and 4-4 in district.
