PLEASANT VIEW – Sycamore has turned over its wrestling program to a familiar face — Steve Hamblin.
Hamblin previously coached at Sycamore Middle School, Sycamore High School and Goodpasture, as well as teams in Illinois, Wisconsin and Michigan.
“Experience is something I can bring to the team,” Hamblin said. “While working with my brother’s program in Michigan, I saw numerous teams accomplish great things including a number of team state titles. I watched boys become men in the process and I bring that same mentality to my programs. I run a strict and disciplined program while teaching respect and hard work. I also teach the importance of winning and losing with dignity while respecting the competition.”
Hamblin said he expects to put his team in a winning position immediately.
“I expect a trip to state duals our first year,” he said. “That is a big deal and it’s a lot of pressure to put on myself and the kids but the ones who have working with me in the past know it’s what I expect. We are going to put in the work and we need to stay healthy and if we can do those two things, we will get there.
“Greenbrier has won this region four years straight and it’s time to change that. This team came real close last season and a majority of the kids are returning and we are adding a few skilled freshmen. A number of our bigger kids are playing football so we will be without them as the season begins and we look forward to having them in the room so we can put all the pieces together to make it happen.”
