ASHLAND CITY – The Cheatham County Central Lady Cubs are ready to get the softball season started after finishing 4-23 overall and 3-9 in District 9-AA last season.

Cheatham was very young last year, but the Lady Cubs did gain experience. The Lady Cubs will once again be young, but the youth from last season paired with the new talent that coach Jahcenda Garrett has added could give the Lady Cubs a chance to compete at a higher level this season.

Cheatham will open its season March 7 at the Beech Play Day at Drakes Creek Park in Hendersonville.

Here’s what Garrett had to say about the upcoming season:

“The girls, Coach Mike and I are extremely excited for this upcoming season. We are expanding our schedule to play teams we normally would never see, and we have a long and tough season ahead, but I believe in playing and competing with the best. The dynamic of this team has changed and I love it!

“We have our core still intact, Jesse Bumpus, our sole senior has a huge leadership role to take and I am excited to see how well she is going to handle it.

“Libby Thompson has the it-factor that can take over a game. It is just if she wants to do it, and this year she will. Molly Gupton is someone who improves every single day, and you can see everything coming together in her, and when it does it’s going to be fun to watch.

“Ansley Pfeffer and Harper Dee are my dynamic duo, my yin and yang. Each are fascinating to watch in their own way: Ansley the explosive one, and Harper the polished one. I love coaching them and their unique styles.

“In addition to our returners, we have eight freshmen and two juniors joining the team. Harliann Gibbs, remember the name, she’s special and her potential is out of this world. She’s another game changer.

My other juniors and freshmen know that they have a huge role on this team. I am anxious to see who steps up to the challenge. Every day we are learning something new. Seeing the girl’s growth is my why. Now that practice starts up this week, the real fun is happening.”
