Mary Miller, academic coordinator for Cheatham County Schools, came up with an idea for Teacher Appreciation Week to celebrate Cheatham’s teachers.
Miller’s idea was to put signs in yards for teachers from all across the Cheatham County area. The signs said, “Thank you for putting the magic in teaching. We appreciate you.”
Even one teacher, Liz Austin, who lives about an hour away, received a sign to go in her yard. In Facebook, Twitter and Instagram posts, many of the local teachers thanked the school district for the act.
School districts across the country had videos and pictures online to celebrate the teachers, but not many school districts went to the lengths of the Cheatham County school district to honor the teachers. It would have been easy to throw together a short video or picture and send it out, but easy didn’t work for Miller or the rest of the district.
The sign idea was incorporated for local graduates, as well. Seniors from all three public high schools in Cheatham County were able to receive their own sign. The same school district and teachers from that school district worked extremely hard getting those signs ready for the seniors. Again, they didn’t have to go to that length; in fact, they really didn’t have to do a whole lot of anything.
