CHARLOTTE – Eli Smith scored three touchdowns for Charlotte Middle in a thrilling, three-overtime 22-14 victory over Harpeth on Thursday.
Smith’s first TD came on a 39-yard yard run, his second was 49-yard interception return and his last was a passing touchdown to Billy Miller in the third and final overtime.
Harpeth Middle took an 8-6 lead in the fourth quarter and later the game at 14 with touchdowns from Hayden Penrod and Landon Perry. Jason Marquardt caught a pass for a 2-point conversion on the first touchdown.
“The team played hard,” Harpeth Middle coach Charles Morehead said. “We lost in the third overtime period, but we did play hard.”
James Hicks led the Charlotte defense with eight tackles and three sacks. Stone Groves had an interception in the second overtime to stop a Harpeth drive.
“Our defense played outstanding tonight,” Charlotte coach Jimmy Murphy said. “We were on the field a lot, and James Hicks played the best game I’ve seen him play in middle school.
“Our defense has carried us all season. Coach Grantham has done an outstanding job with that unit. Our offense had some chances to score, but we’re going to have to quit shooting ourselves in the foot with turnovers and negative plays.”
