Spirituality becomes stagnant if you stand still

“Draw near to God and he will draw near to you.” (James 4:8)

Time doesn’t stand still and those of us fortunate enough to be alive do not stand still either.

We are either making progress or we are regressing. This is especially true when it comes to our walk with Christ. I’ve never stood still for too long without a feeling of discontentment. It is never God’s will for our hearts to grow lukewarm or stagnant. The apostle Paul said he pressed forward. In other words, he exerted all of his energy to gain spiritual ground.

Being close to Christ and living in communion with Him was his heart’s desire. While we still have the gift of time, we also have the gift of choice. How will we spend our time? Will we use it haphazardly or will we redeem it and make the best use of what remains?

Stagnant waters are dangerous because they have nothing to push out the contaminates. Our lives become stagnant as a result of laziness in spiritual matters. When we do not allow the living water of God’s word to push out our many faults, we suffer. Streams run crystal clear because there is a continuous flow. A healthy spiritual life is advanced by action.

I would be naive to think I could sit idly by in my Christian life and yet be a stream in the desert to a fellow believer. If we do not strive to make advances toward Christ through prayer and fellowship, we become useless, having nothing much to offer except what our flesh may afford.

We’re all as close to Christ as we want to be.

“Refuse to be average, let your heart soar as close to Christ as it will.” — A.W. Tozer
