Multiple agencies searched an area near the Cheatham Dam beach for a 19-year-old man who was later found to have drowned.

A swimmer who drowned near the Cheatham Dam beach on Wednesday, July 3 has been identified as a 19-year-old Clarksville man.

Galen Jones went missing after he and his younger brother swam to a buoy past a safety barrier, Cheatham County Sheriff Mike Breedlove said.

The teen went underwater before coming up for air and calling for help, Breedlove said. Family members reported the incident at about 2 p.m.  and Cheatham County’s emergency management agency, EMS personnel, deputies and Ashland City police officers responded to the scene. 

Help also arrived from Pleasant View, Clarksville, Montgomery County and Metro Nashville’s Emergency Management.

At about 8 p.m. Wednesday, Jones’ body was discovered and identified by family members, Breedlove said.

Jones’ body will be sent to the medical examiner’s office in Nashville for an autopsy.
