The Ashland City Council gave the thumbs-up for a distillery to be built along Highway 12 South at Trinity Road.
Nashville-based Corsair Distillery is planning the operation, which might include a gift shop, owner Derek Bell told the town council last week.
The council voted to rezone part of the land, a section that town staff said appeared to be zoned residential for reasons it could not explain because the rest of the property and surrounding properties are all zoned industrial or commercial.
The unanimous vote brought final passage to an ordinance, which was effectively a fix to ensure the whole property for the distillery is properly zoned. The first reading of the ordinance was in January.
The next step for Corsair is to develop a site plan that would go before the town Planning Commission. No timetable for that was immediately established.
Bell told the council the distillery operation would include a rickhouse, which is a facility for storing barrels of liquor during the aging process.
People have encouraged Bell to include a restaurant, but that is not part of the plan, Bell told the council.
“Everyone asks me: Am I going to put a restaurant there? The answer is no,” Bell said.
Corsair Distillery has two Nashville locations, according to the company’s website.
The headquarters is at 601 Merritt Ave., and the other site is at 1200 Clinton St. in the historic Marathon Motor Works building.
Corsair’s products include single malt whiskey, rye malt whiskey, gin and craft beer, according to the website.
