School board will purchase land for new Sycamore high school

Cheatham County is one step closer to constructing a new building for Sycamore High School after the school board voted to purchase nearly 56 acres for the project at its Nov. 5 meeting.

The property, which is located behind Sycamore Middle School and the current Sycamore High School, will cost $18,000 per acre for an estimated total of $1,008,000, district spokesperson Tim Adkins said.

The money that will be used for the purchase will come from the education debt service, Adkins said.

“Money in this account can only be used for capital projects such as this and can’t be used toward our operating budget,” he said.

The new school will alleviate overcrowding in the current SHS building and address anticipated growth and an increase in students in the Pleasant View area.

The board also voted to authorize director of schools Cathy Beck to sign a contract for the purchase, which is part of the district’s five-year plan. The land deal is expected to close in January, Adkins said.

Once the new school is built, the district is planning a reconfiguration of the use of all the north cluster schools, he said.

In a third motion, the board voted to reallocate funds originally reserved to expand the existing SHS cafeteria and use them for the purchase of new property.

The property will also be the location of a new bus barn, Adkins said.

A timetable for the construction of the new school has not yet been determined, he said.
