Through the help of customer donations, a restaurant in Pleasant View has paid off all outstanding lunch charges for Sycamore Middle School students

The $563 that Kilgore’s Family Restaurant raised also helped pay off a portion of the Sycamore High School lunch charges.

The restaurant’s manager, Melinda Hamilton, said she had been interested in doing something positive for the community when she heard about the overdue lunch fees from her sons, who are students at the middle school.

“Every day I would give them each a dollar and one of them always asked for two,” she said. “I asked him why … and he said that he uses one for himself and one for his friend.”

The friend was receiving a different meal at lunchtime because his family hadn’t paid off their charges, she said.

“If we could pay off some balances, maybe these kids wouldn’t have to do the whole different lunch than the rest of them,” she said.

The restaurant decided to put out a jar for donations and soon they had the money to donate.

“Our customers loved it, everyone was really generous,” she said.

Other community members are organizing a fundraiser concert, Heartstrings for Hope, to help pay off other Cheatham students’ lunch charges.

The free concert, held at Gateway Church, will take place Thursday, June 6, according to a flyer for the event. Donations are requested for the show, which will feature performers Danny Green, Mo Pitney, Larry Chunn, Monica Campbell, Deanie Richardson, Ivy and Grayson Phillips, the Hester Family Band and Cara Digiovanni.

Doors will open at 6:30 p.m. and the show begins at 7 p.m. Donations can be made at Pinnacle Bank under the Heartstrings for Hope account, according to the flyer.
